Configuring Outlook 2003 with typical mail settings

Configure Outlook 2003 so you can check your university email account. These instructions apply to your ULID account (not to Exchange email).

Before You Begin

These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2003 with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Outlook primarily from on campus (with the option of using it from off campus).

If you plan to use Outlook primarily from off campus, refer to 1382: Configuring Outlook 2003/2007 with MailVPN settings.

Faculty/Staff on Exchange: If you are faculty or staff and use Outlook for email, you may be on Exchange. If you are on Exchange for email, these instructions do not apply to you. Contact your department's technical support for help. For more information, refer to 1254: Configuring Outlook 2003 for Exchange.

Configure Outlook 2003

To configure Outlook 2003 so you can use it with your ULID email account, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook 2003.
  2. Click Tools > E-mail Accounts...
  3. Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  4. Select whether you would like to use IMAP or POP3 and click Next. If you're not sure what to choose, pick IMAP. See 1172: What is the difference between POP and IMAP?.
  5. Enter your name in the box labeled Your Name:. Enter your university email address in the box labeled E-mail Address:.
  6. In the Incoming Mail Server: box, type mail.ilstu.edu and in the Outgoing Mail Server: box, type smtp.ilstu.edu.
  7. Make sure your ULID is in the User Name: box. You may type your password in the Password: box. When you are done, click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Outlook will then attempt to check mail. Enter your password if prompted to do so. You may need to connect over VPN prior to checking your mail (see below).

You may now use Outlook to check and send email.

Off-campus users: To check your email from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. If you use Outlook 2003 primarily from off campus, you can configure it with MailVPN settings, which eliminates the need for an independent VPN connection.
