Can I check and send non-ISU email while on campus?

You can check non-ISU email while on campus, but when you send email it must come from a valid ilstu.edu address.

As a preventative security measure against mass-mailing viruses, Illinois State University places restrictions on sending non-ISU email. There are no restrictions on receiving email.

Restrictions on Sending Email with a non-ISU Account

These restrictions apply only to client-based email (like Thunderbird or Outlook), not web-based email (like Yahoo mail or Gmail). While you are connected to the campus network, the following restrictions apply to sending email:

  • All outbound email must pass through smtp.ilstu.edu, the University's SMTP Send-Mail server. Any outbound email attempted to be sent through another SMTP server is blocked.

  • All outbound email must be sent from a valid ilstu.edu email address. For example, Reggie Redbird has two email addresses: rrredbi@ilstu.edu is a valid address, but rrredbi@insightbb.com is invalid because it is not an Illinois State email address.

Checking Email with a non-ISU Account

The University does not restrict you from checking email on another account. You can configure your email client (like Thunderbird or Outlook) to receive email from a non-ISU account.
