If you think you might have a virus, scan your computer with McAfee VirusScan 8.5i.
Before You Begin
Before you use McAfee VirusScan to scan your computer, you should temporarily disable System Restore.
Windows XP
To disable System Restore in Windows XP, do the following:
- Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click on the System Restore tab.
- Place a check mark next to Turn off System Restore on all drives.
- Click Apply and then Close.
Windows Vista
To disable System Restore in Windows Vista, do the following:
- Click Start and type
system in the search box. - Click System from the list of results.
- Click Advanced System Settings.
- Confirm you wish to make these changes.
- Click the System Protection tab.
- Remove the check mark from each hard disk you plan to scan.
- Confirm you wish to turn off System Restore by clicking Turn Off System Restore.
- Click Apply and then Close.
After you finishing scanning with McAfee VirusScan, you can turn System Restore back on.
Scan Your Computer with McAfee VirusScan
To perform an on-demand scan using McAfee VirusScan 8.5i in Windows XP or Windows Vista, follow the directions below.
- Right-click on the McAfee VirusScan icon in your system tray (in the lower-right corner of the desktop, next to your clock).
- Select On-Demand Scan... from the pop-up menu.
- Click Start to begin scanning your computer for viruses.
- If VirusScan finds a a virus, it will alert you.
When a Virus is Found...
If a virus is found, VirusScan will try to clean the file first. If VirusScan is unable to clean the infected file, it will try to delete the file.
