Conditions of Access

Computers that connect to the campus network must meet the Conditions of Access (COA).

What are the Conditions of Access?

All computers that connect to Illinois State University's network must meet the Conditions of Access (COA):

  1. The computer must have the university-approved version of McAfee VirusScan or Virex installed and updated. If you have another anti-virus product installed, you must remove it and install the university-approved version.

All members of the University may download McAfee VirusScan and Virex at no cost from the Help Desk website.

  2. The computer must have all available security updates installed. This includes all security updates for the host operating system, as well as available security updates for installed software.

Windows computers can get critical system updates from Microsoft's update website. You must use Internet Explorer to obtain updates in this way. Mac computers can get critical system updates from Apple's support website.

Any computer that fails to comply with the Conditions of Access may be taken offline until it can be updated so it meets the requirements.

Why have conditions for access?

Internet threats reduce your ability to use your computer for academic pursuits, research, and public service.

  • Viruses cause major problems.
In a short time, a single infected computer can infect many other unprotected computers, which can lead to network interuptions or failure.
  • Protect against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
Vulnerable computers can be used by hackers and viruses to launch attacks that deny everyone access to important servers and services.
  • Security is everyone’s responsibility.
You need to do your part to keep the campus network safe for yourself and others.

Why do I have to use the university-approved anti-virus?

You must remove your anti-virus software and install the university-approved version of McAfee VirusScan (for Windows) or Virex (for Mac). This University requires this for a few reasons.

  • Updates are guaranteed.
Computers in campus offices and student-owned computers on ResNet have anti-virus updates managed by McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), which guarantees that McAfee VirusScan stays up to date.
  • Complete coverage guaranteed.
Because everyone must use the same anti-virus, complete anti-virus coverage across ResNet computers is guaranteed. If a student-owned computer does not have the university-approved anti-virus software installed, it is not allowed on the campus network.
  • Consistency in support.
By requiring everyone to use the same anti-virus software, the University's technical support staff can more easily and more effectively handle anti-virus support issues.
  • Multiple anti-virus causes conflicts.
You must remove your existing anti-virus software because if you have more than one anti-virus product installed at the same time, it will cause major problems.
