Configuring "isunet" on Windows Mobile 5 using PEAP and Windows Mobile Device Manager on Windows Vista

These instructions explain how to configure Windows Mobile 5 to connect to the "isunet" wireless network on campus.

Before You Begin

These instructions are for Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Vista.

These instructions require you to connect your device to your Windows Vista computer and use Windows Mobile Device Center to copy Entrust certificates onto your device. You also need to be within range of the "isunet" wireless network to complete the setup.

Important: These instructions were written using a Dell Axim x51. Some steps may be different on devices created by other manufacturers.

Configure Windows Mobile 5

Configuring Windows Mobile 5 for "isunet" wireless access involves three main steps:

  • Step 1 - Download Entrust certificates for Windows Mobile 5 and copy them onto your device
  • Step 2 - Install Entrust certificates on your Windows Mobile 5 device
  • Step 3 - Configure "isunet" in the WLAN Utility in Windows Mobile 5

Each of these steps is explained in detail below.

Step 1 - Download Entrust Certificates for Windows Mobile 5 and Copy Them Onto Your Device

To download the Entrust certificates for Windows Mobile 5 and copy them onto your device, do the following:

  1. Using a web browser on your computer (not on your device), download the Entrust certificates for Windows Mobile 5.
  2. Using the cable or dock that came with your Windows Mobile 5 device, connect your Windows Mobile 5 device to your Windows Vista computer.
  3. Windows Mobile Device Center may automatically open.
    • If it does not automatically open, launch Windows Mobile Device Center by clicking Vista Start> Control Panel> Sync Center. Then double-click on your device under the Devices heading.
  4. Move your mouse over File Management and click Browse the contents of your device. A window will open which shows the files on your Windows Mobile 5 device.
  5. Browse to the folder where you want to transfer the Entrust certificates. For example, browse to your My Documents folder.
  6. Double-click on the .ZIP file you downloaded. This file is named Entrust Cert for Windows Mobile 5.zip.
  7. Copy the Entrust certificate files from the .ZIP file you downloaded and paste them into the folder on your Windows Mobile 5 device. These files are named entrust_2048_DER.cer and entrust_l1b_DER.cer.
    • Do not copy the .ZIP file onto your Windows Mobile 5 device.
  8. You may now close any folders or windows you have open, including Windows Mobile Device Center.
  9. Disconnect your Windows Mobile 5 device from your computer.

Now that the Entrust certificate files are on your device, you can install them.

Step 2 - Install Entrust Certificates on your Windows Mobile 5 Device

To install the Entrust certificates for Windows Mobile 5, do the following:

  1. On your device, click Start> File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the folder where you copied the Entrust certificates. For example, browse to the My Documents folder.
  3. Click on the first certificate file, entrust_2048_DER.cer.
  4. A Certificate message will appear which says, You are about to install \entrust_2048_DER.cer, a certificate issued by Entrust.net Certification Authority (2048). Do you want to continue? Click Yes.
  5. Click the second certificate file, entrust_l1b_DER.cer.
  6. A Certificate message will appear which says, You are about to install \entrust_l1b_DER.cer, a certificate issued by Entrust.net Certification Authority (2048). Do you want to continue? Click Yes.

The Entrust certificates are now installed. You may now configure "isunet" in Windows Mobile 5.

Step 3 - Configure "isunet" in the WLAN Utility on Windows Mobile 5

To configure "isunet" on Windows Mobile 5, do the following:

  1. Click Start> Settings.
  2. Click the Connections tab.
  3. Click Dell WLAN Utility.
  4. Click the Turn On button to turn on wireless for your device.
  5. Click the Setting button.
  6. Click isunet from the list labeled Configure Wireless Networks.
  7. Select The Internet for Connects to:
  8. Click the Network Key tab.
  9. Select WPA for Authentication: and TKIP for Data Encryption:.
  10. Click the 802.1x tab.
  11. Select PEAP as the EAP type:.
  12. Click OK.

Connecting to "isunet" with the WLAN Utility

After installing the Entrust certificates and configuring the WLAN Utility, you can connect to "isunet" on campus.

  1. Turn on your Axim's wireless (if it's not already on).
  2. The WLAN Utility will automatically try to connect. If it does not:
    • Open the WLAN Utility.
    • Click the Setting button.
    • Click and hold on isunet and select Connect.
  3. Enter your ULID and password, and type ADILSTU in the Domain: box.
  4. Your status will be "connected" and a double arrow icon will appear at the top of your screen next to your clock.
