Coping with spam in iCampus by creating a filter to move ISU email to a designated folder

By creating a filter in iCampus, you can automatically move ilstu.edu email messages into a designated folder so they are easier to find and read.

These instructions explain how to create an email filter in iCampus. This filter will automatically move email sent From: something@ilstu.edu to a folder you specify.

By moving ilstu.edu email out of your Inbox into a designated folder, you can more easily locate important ISU email messages. If you get a lot of spam (junk email), this can help you because you no longer have to wade through spam email to find your ISU email.

This filter won't prevent you from getting junk email; it helps you separate junk email from ISU email. Also, legitimate emails sent to you from addresses other than ilstu.edu will still show up in your Inbox (along with whatever spam you receive).

To create a filter in iCampus to automatically move email From: ilstu.edu to a folder called "ISU Email" follow the directions below.

  1. Go to iCampus at http://www.icampus.ilstu.edu/.
  2. Log in with your ULID and password.
  3. Click on the Inbox icon in your E-mail channel.
  4. Click on the Folders icon.
  5. Click on the New Folder icon.
  6. Type ISU Emails into the New folder name box and click the Create button.
  7. Click on the Options icon.
  8. Locate the section labeled, Configure Email Filter(s) at the bottom of the window.
  9. Select SENDER from the first drop-down box.
  10. Select CONTAINS from the second drop-down box.
  11. Type @ilstu.edu in the next box.
  12. Select ISU Emails from the last drop-down box.
  13. Click the Save and Exit button.

After creating this filter, any emails sent to you from an ISU (ilstu.edu) email address will be automatically moved to the ISU Emails folder you created. Email sent from ilstu.edu will no longer appear in your Inbox. To access your ISU Emails folder, click the Folders icon and then click the ISU Emails icon.

If you use Webmail or another email client (like Thunderbird or Outlook) in addition to iCampus, you may want to configure a similar email filter in those clients as well. The instructions above apply only to email received in iCampus.
