Troubleshooting typical Blackboard problems

Try these suggestions if you have problems using Blackboard.

Before You Begin

These suggestions typically resolve the following problems:

  • Unable to take quizzes in Blackboard
  • Unable to attach files in Blackboard
  • Blackboard displays a red X instead of the My Computer section

To resolve these issues, do the following (details are described below):

  1. Install the latest version of Java.
  2. Clear your browser cache.
  3. Go back to Blackboard and log in.
  4. Click Run or Yes on each security warning that appears when you log in to Blackboard.

You should now be able to log in and use Blackboard.

Java 1.4.1 Required

Blackboard requires Java 1.4.1 (or higher). If you are having problems accessing Blackboard, download the latest version of Java and install it.

Important: You must agree to the Java security certificate when logging into Blackboard.

  1. Log in to Blackboard.
  2. Click Run or Yes to accept the Java security certificate. (Figure 1)

If you clicked Cancel or closed the Java security certificate without agreeing to it, you will be unable to use Blackboard. To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Clear your browser cache, as described below.
  2. Go back to Blackboard and log in.
  3. The Java security certificate will appear. Click Run or Yes to accept the Java security certificate.

Clear Your Browser Cache

Clearing your browser cache forces your web browser to obtain new copies of Internet files when you visit websites.

To clear your web browser's cache, refer to the appropriate article below. You need only perform instructions for the web browser you use to access Blackboard.

Disable Pop-up Blockers

Blackboard uses pop-up windows to deliver some content. If you have a pop-up blocker installed, you should disable it when using Blackboard. This includes third-party pop-up blockers as well, such as the Yahoo! tool bar.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Some quizzes require the use of the Respondus LockDown Browser. If you're not using that browser, you won't be able to take the quiz. The decision to require the Respondus LockDown Browser is made by the instructor. For more information, refer to 1467: Overview of Respondus LockDown Browser for Blackboard.
