Configure Outlook 2003/2007 with MailVPN settings so you can check and send email from off campus without needing an independent VPN connection.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Outlook primarily from off campus (with the option of using it from on campus).
If you plan to use Outlook primarily from on campus, refer to 1014: Configuring Outlook 2003 with typical mail settings.
Faculty/Staff on Exchange: If you are faculty or staff and use Outlook for email, you may be on Exchange. If you use Exchange for email, these instructions do not apply to you. Contact your department's technical support for help. For more information, refer to 1254: Configuring Outlook 2003 for Exchange.
Configure Outlook 2003/2007
To configure Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 to use WebVPN mail settings, do the following:
- Launch Outlook.
- Do one of the following:
- In Outlook 2003, click Tools > E-mail Accounts.
- In Outlook 2007, click Tools > Account Settings.
- Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next (Outlook 2003).
- Select IMAP. WebVPN mail settings do not work with POP. For more information, see 1172: What is the difference between POP and IMAP?.
- Click Next.
- In the Your Name: box, type your full name as you want it to appear on outgoing email.
- In the E-mail Address: box, type
yourULID@ilstu.edu. - In the Incoming mail server (IMAP): box, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu.
- In the Outgoing mail server (IMAP): box, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. - Click More Settings....
- Type a name of the account in the Mail Account box.
For example, name the account My ISU Email (MailVPN). - Click the Outgoing Server tab.
- Put a check in the box labeled, My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- For Incoming server (IMAP):, do the following:
- In Outlook 2003, put a check next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
- In Outlook 2007, change Use the following type of encrypted connection: to SSL.
- Make sure
993 appears next to Incoming server (IMAP).
- For Outgoing server (SMTP):, do the following:
- In Outlook 2003, put a check next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
- In Outlook 2007, change Use the following type of encrypted connection: to SSL.
- Change the port number from 25 to
465 next to Outgoing server (SMTP).
- Click OK.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
You can now use Outlook to check and send mail from off campus without needing an independent VPN connection.
