Configuring Outlook 2007 with typical mail settings

Configure Outlook 2007 so you can check your university email account. These instructions apply to your ULID account (not to Exchange email).

Before You Begin 

These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2007 with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Outlook primarily from on campus (with the option of using it from off campus).

If you plan to use Outlook primarily from off campus, refer to 1382: Configuring Outlook 2003/2007 with MailVPN settings.

Faculty/Staff on Exchange: If you are faculty or staff and use Outlook for email, you may be on Exchange. If you are on Exchange for email, these instructions do not apply to you. Contact your department's technical support for help. For more information, refer to 1243: Configuring Outlook 2007 for Exchange.

Configuring Outlook 2007

To configure Outlook 2007 so you can use it with your ULID email account, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook 2007.
  2. Click Tools> Account Settings....
  3. Click New....
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next.
  5. Enter your name in the box labeled Your Name:. Enter your university email address in the box labeled E-mail Address:.
  6. Leave the Password: and Retype Password: boxes empty.
  7. Put a check mark in the box labeled Manually configure server settings or additional server types and click Next.
  8. Select Internet E-Mail and click Next.
  9. Click the Account Type: drop-down menu and choose either IMAP or POP3. If you're not sure what to choose, pick IMAP. See 1172: What is the difference between POP and IMAP?.
  10. Type mail.ilstu.edu in the Incoming mail server: box, and type smtp.ilstu.edu in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP): box.
  11. Type your ULID, the first part of your email address, in the User Name: box.
  12. You may type your password in the Password: box, or you may leave it blank. If you do not want Outlook to save your password, remove the check mark from the box labeled Remember Password.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Click Finish.
  15. Click Close.
  16. Outlook will attempt to check mail. Enter your password if prompted to do so. You may need to connect over VPN prior to checking your mail (see below).
You may now use Outlook to check and send email.
 
Off-campus users: To check your email from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. If you use Outlook 2007 from off campus exclusively, you can configure it with MailVPN settings, which eliminates the need for an independent VPN connection.
