Configure Windows Mail with MailVPN settings so you can check and send email from off campus without needing an independent VPN connection.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to configure Windows Mail with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Windows Mail primarily from off campus (with the option of using it from on campus).
If you plan to use Windows Mail primarily from on campus, refer to 1221: Configuring Windows Mail with typical mail settings.
Configure Windows Mail
To configure Windows Mail to use MailVPN mail settings, do the following:
- Launch Outlook Express or Windows Mail.
- Click Tools > Accounts....
- Click Add...
- Select E-mail Account.
- Click Next.
- In the Display name: box, type your full name as you want it to appear on outgoing email.
- Click Next.
- In the E-mail address: box, type
yourULID@ilstu.edu. - Click Next.
- Under Incoming e-mail server type:, select IMAP.
- In the box labeled, Incoming mail (POP or IMAP) server:, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. - In the box labeled, Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. - Place a check in the box labeled, Outgoing server requires authentication.
- Click Next.
- In the E-mail username: box, type your ULID (the first part of your email address).
- In the Password: box, type your password.
- Click Next.
- Put a check mark in the box labeled, Do not download my e-mail and folders at this time.
- Click Finish.
- Select your university email account and click the Properties button.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- For Outgoing mail (SMTP):, do the following:
- Put a check mark next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Change the port number from 25 to
465 next to Outgoing mail (SMTP).
- For Incoming mail (IMAP):, do the following:
- Put a check next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Make sure
993 appears next to Incoming mail (IMAP).
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
- When you are asked, Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added, click Yes.
- Windows Mail will download your IMAP folders. When it is done, click OK.
You can now use Windows Mail to check and send mail from off campus without needing an independent VPN connection.
