Troubleshooting "isunet" connection problems on Mac OS X 10.5

If you are having problems connecting to the “isunet” wireless network using Mac OS X 10.5, follow these steps to try to resolve the problem.

Before You Begin

Mac OS X 10.5 can normally automatically connect to "isunet" without any special configuration. For more information, refer to 1262: How to update Mac OS X and Apple applications.

These instructions explain how to remove all network and Keychain settings related to "isunet" in Mac OS X 10.5. Once you have removed everything related to "isunet" on your computer, try connecting to "isunet" again.

Update to the Latest Version of Mac OS X 10.5

These instructions are for the latest version of Mac OS X 10.5, which is 10.5.6 at the time this article was written. If you have an older version of Mac OS X 10.5, some of these instructions may not work for you.

We recommend updating to the latest version of Mac OS X 10.5 before you attempt to troubleshooting your "isunet" wireless problems. Using another Internet connection, such as the Internet connection in your home or office, run Software Update. For more information, refer to 1262: How to update Mac OS X and Apple applications.

Clear Network Preferences

To clear network preferences in Mac OS X 10.5, do the following:

  1. Click on the AirPort Menu (wireless symbol) on the menu bar.
  2. If it is not already off, click Turn AirPort Off.
  3. Click the AirPort Menu again and select Open Network Preferences...
  4. Select AirPort on the left.
  5. Remove the check mark next to Ask to join new networks.
  6. Click the Advanced... button.
  7. Click the AirPort tab.
  8. Remove any networks named isunet in the list labeled Preferred Networks:.
    • To do this, select isunet and click the minus (-) button located below the Preferred Networks: box.
  9. Remove the check mark next to Remember any network this computer has joined. (Figure 1)
  10. Click the 802.1X tab.
  11. Remove any profiles with isunet in the name. (Figure 2)
    • Profiles are located on the left side of the window.
    • You may need to click the arrow next to each profile group (i.e. User Profiles, System Profiles, etc.) to see all the profiles.
    • To remove a profile, select it and then click the minus (-) button located in the lower-left.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Apply.
  14. Close the Network window.

Clear "isunet" From Your Keychain

To clear "isunet" from your Keychain, do the following:
  1. Double-click your hard drive > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access.
  2. Select login under Keychains on the left.
  3. Select All Items under Category on the left.
  4. Remove any items with tel.ilstu.edu, Entrust.net, or isunet in their names. (Figure 3) Here are some examples.
    • aaawap-ch210.tel.ilstu.edu
    • aaawap-stv.tel.ilstu.edu
    • These are not the only possible items. You could have different items in your Keychain.
  5. To remove a Keychain item, select it and press the delete key on your keyboard.
    • If you are asked, Are you sure you want to delete the selected items from the list? click Delete.
  6. Close Keychain Access.
  7. You must restart your computer to completely remove any wireless sessions that were saved.

Configure an "isunet" Profile

To manually configure an "isunet" profile in Mac OS X 10.5, do the following.
  1. Click on the AirPort Menu (wireless symbol) on the menu bar.
  2. If it is not already on, click Turn AirPort On.
  3. Click the AirPort Menu again and select Open Network Preferences....
  4. Select AirPort on the left.
  5. Click the Advanced... button.
  6. Click the 802.1X tab.
  7. Click the plus (+) button and select Add User Profile. (Figure 4)
  8. Type isunet for the name of the User Profile.
  9. Enter your ULID in the User Name: box.
  10. Enter your password for the Password: box.,
  11. Click the Wireless Network: drop-down menu and select isunet.
    • You must be on campus and within range of "isunet" to complete this step.
  12. Under Authentication:, make sure that only a PEAP has a check mark next to it. Remove the check mark next to all other items in the Authentication: list.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Apply.
  15. Close the Network window.

Connect to the “isunet” Wireless Network

To connect to the "isunet" wireless network, do the following:
  1. Click the AirPort Menu and select Open Network Preferences....
  2. Select AirPort on the left.
  3. Put a check mark next to Ask to join new networks. (Figure 1)
  4. Click the Advanced... button.
  5. Click the AirPort tab.
  6. Put a check mark next to Remember any network this computer has joined. (Figure 4)
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click the Network Name: drop-down menu and select isunet from the list.
  10. Log in with your ULID and password when prompted to do so.
  11. If you receive a Verify Certificate window, click Continue.

You are now connected to "isunet."
